Pumping Iron

Aihe Uncategorized, 15.1.2008 12:57, Lisa Atack

For the last two weeks, I have been going to several gym classes (weights/step/bike) with a friend who lives in town. Normally, I just go to the gym and play on different machines until I get bored…but going to the classes is much more interesting, especially when you don’t speak the language.

So far, the step classes have been the hardest to follow with the language barrier… I am the person who is still doing the aerobic move to the right and running into my neighbor because the instructor has told everyone to switch to the left. Since I have gone a few times, I think people are starting to catch on to the fact that I don’t speak Finnish and I’m not just uncoordinated (although I am; so not speaking Finnish is a convenient excuse). Because people now know I am uncoordinated, I mean…can’t understand the instructor…people don’t stand so close to me (I pretty much have a fourth of the room to myself!).

The cycling classes are pretty intense as well because the instructor is constantly yelling my name!… Okay, well it’s not actually referring to me but still, when she yells “Lisä! Lisä!” (which means to increase/more and is in reference to the pedal resistance) I feel as though I have to pedal faster! So on that note, cycling is probably the most exhausting class I’m taking because I can never please the instructor!

Lost to Ilves (pronounced kind of like Elvis, as in Elvis Presley) 4-1. Game was on Canal Plus so maybe they were nervous; I don’t know… I always make some sort of excuse for them when they play poorly!

Beat HIFK 4-1. So the game against HIFK was interesting… I couldn’t stop watching their fans who had set off some sort of flare…I don’t think they realized that both teams would have to play in the fog, not just TPS.

Lost to Jokerit 2-1… Lee’s thoughts simplified: Team played really well but the refs were horrible. The coach of Jokerit is really loud and scares the refs to make all the calls in favor of Jokerit.

And of course we have to add picture of Mikku…this is when it was snowing (obviously)… It was so beautiful here….Mikku is going to miss the snow when he goes back to California!

Hi, thanks for quite an interesting blog!

I happened to snap a photo of Lee at the game against Ilves that you can find through the link above. (I’m sorry that my camera is not up to more exciting action shots… ;))

Lisa Atack: 18.1.2008 kello 14:10

Well, Lee and I are going home for the summer no matter what team he signs with next season….so that is what I meant by miss the snow! Lee really has no idea where he is going to be next season…as soon as I know I will write it in my blog…maybe TPS!!!

Lisa Atack: 18.1.2008 kello 14:11

I couldn’t find the link…but I’m sure Lee would want to see the picture.

2mas: 18.1.2008 kello 14:40

I found the link! Could it propably perhaps be in name Saruwine?

Saruwine: 18.1.2008 kello 14:41

Oh, sorry, I meant that my nickname above links to the photo. Anyway, here’s the address:

By the way, there is also a page about Lee on the Finnish Wikipedia (unfortunately, not on the English language one yet).

PS. I sure would love to see Lee in an Ilves jersey next year… but I guess we’ll have to wait and see. :)

I´ve been reading your blog for a while and are really curious of one thing. How are you (Lisa) adapting on daily basis? I can imagine that Lee is busy all day with the team and all but how are you coping with the strange environment? Of course you must have made some friends by now but it must be frustrating at times though. Nothing personal about this but I am just wondering about it for my own future (maybe commissioned abroad in future).
